Handwoven Téra-tera Blankets from Niger

Master tera-tera weaver Aboulwahid Goumer at work

ONG DIMA’s online shop is featuring the work of master weaver Aboulwahid Goumer. Goumer began his career as a weaver by working with his uncle in a small village north of Niamey, the capital city of Niger. In 1980, Goumer joined the Musée National Boubou Hama du Niger in Niamey. In addition to working at the museum, he is helping ONG DIMA develop a weaving school.

Goumer weaves in a Nigerien style known as téra-téra. Téra-téra blankets are given to brides and grooms as wedding gifts in Niger. The blankets are woven with cotton thread in long strips, a traditional method of weaving in West Africa, and then tacked together. Tacking, but not completely sewing the strips together, indicates to the purchaser that the textile is new and not previously used.
